Stefanos Tsitsipas crowns top tournament with third Monte Carlo masters tournament title

16 Apr 2024 | George Fotev

Stefanos Tsitsipas has won the Monte Carlo masters tournament for the third time in his career. The 25-year-old Greek defeated Casper Ruud 6-1 6-4 in the final.

Tsitsipas, currently twelfth in the world rankings, was previously the best in 2021 and 2022 at the clay tournament. His last title dates back to August last year when he was the best in Los Cabos in Mexico.

To reach the final in Monte Carlo, he defeated the strong-performing Italian Jannik Sinner in three sets. Ruud also won a tournament for the last time last year. He reached the final in Monte Carlo by beating world number 1 Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals in three sets.

Ruud, number 10 in the world rankings, already surrendered his serve against Tsitsipas at 1-1 in the first set. The Greek then took two more breaks and won the set 6-1.

Things went evenly in the second set. Tsitsipas needed a long game to get to 4-3 and had to eliminate some break points to do so. After an easier service win at 4-4, the Greek got his first match point at 30-40 after more than an hour and a half and struck immediately after a long rally.
