Daniil Medvedev goes crazy again against umpire: ‘Open your eyes!’

16 Apr 2024 | George Fotev

Daniil Medvedev has misbehaved for the second day in a row at the Monte Carlo masters tournament. The Russian tennis player raged against the umpire on Wednesday and did so again a day later. This time he even received a penalty point and he was unable to recover from it.

In his match against Gaël Monfils, Medvedev already had a problem with the umpire, whom he even called an ‘asshole’. He got away with that, but a day later things went wrong again in his duel with fellow countryman Karen Khachanov. Medvedev lost the first set and in the second set things went wrong again at the end.

Medvedev hit a double fault at 5-5 when Khachanov had a break opportunity. That caused frustration for the Russian, who threw his racket away hard. That earned him a warning, but when he arrived at his seat there was even more frustration when he saw the physiotherapist coming onto the court for him. Medvedev knew nothing and asked umpire Carlos Bernardes in a not very friendly manner when exactly he had asked for the physio.

Eventually the supervisor had to be called in and Medvedev also ranted about something else to him: “Go and look at the print, the ball is out of bounds. They no longer understand how to be a referee. Who is going to take action? Who is going to take responsibility? Yesterday a ball was called in. It’s not my job to be a referee. He doesn’t need glasses, because he can’t see anything.”

Penalty point

The Russian wasn’t done with his rant yet: “Open your eyes, do something! Open your eyes now!” The umpire had enough after those words and also gave Medvedev a warning for his words. That was his second and that results in a penalty point. Khachanov started the game at 6-5 with a 15-0 lead and then served out the match. Medvedev’s bumpy adventure is now over in Monte Carlo.

Two days in a row

Medvedev had already had an argument with umpire Mohamed Lahyani a day earlier. Remarkably, he didn’t give him a warning despite the Russian calling him an asshole . Then he continued in Russian for a while, but that didn’t get him a warning either.
