Daniil Medvedev explodes in Monte Carlo, smashes parasol and calls umpire ‘asshole’

16 Apr 2024 | George Fotev

Daniil Medvedev defeated Gaël Monfils in the second round of the clay tournament in Monte Carlo. The fourth-seeded Russian beat the veteran admitted with a wild card 6-2, 6-4. In the second set, Medvedev had a fit of rage.

Medvedev had a heated conversation with the umpire, Mohamed Lahyani. The reason for his dissatisfaction was, you guessed it, an umpire’s decision about whether a ball was in or out. The best man judged that Monfils had hit the ball within the lines. And what did Medvedev think? ” It’s out! It’s out! “, he ranted. When the umpire wanted to discuss the situation, the frustrated Russian punched the parasol roof of his chair. Then he gave the structure a few more tugs.

Out

The umpire suddenly appeared to be no longer so sure of his decision. “If I’m wrong, I apologize,” he said humbly. “How can you apologize?” Meddie responded .

“I lost the damn game! You guys are getting more and more ridiculous. You guys need to step up your game. You guys are blind. How did I lose the game when the ball was out of bounds. It was out. Out. OUT! Unbelievable.” Then he continued in Russian and it is probably for the best that we are not able to translate those words.

A..hole

It is striking that Lahyani did not give a warning to the grumbling Medvedev, while the Russian said things that are normally unacceptable in a tennis match. He also called the umpire an ‘asshole’, according to Tennis Up To Date.

In the third round of the masters tournament he will meet fellow countryman Karen Khachanov. Then he has to be careful when talking in Russian.
